Welcome to the Violet Femmes, NYU’s women’s Ultimate Frisbee team! Ultimate is the nation’s fastest-growing college sport, combining the movement of soccer and basketball with the passing and scoring of football, in a fast-paced, non-contact game. Ultimate is unique insofar as it is self-officiated, and guided by the principles of sportsmanship and respect for teammates and opponents alike.
Though the Femmes have been quite successful the past couple of seasons, most new members have never played organized Ultimate before. Many new players have some previous sports experience (soccer, track, softball, basketball, swimming, etc.), but no previous Ultimate experience is necessary – we’ll teach you how to play!
College Ultimate is divided into two seasons: fall and spring. During the fall we focus on teaching the game to new players. During the spring we gear up for the national college tournament, which starts with Metro New York Sectionals in April. We practice once or twice a week at local parks. We also take a few NYU-funded weekend bus trips each semester to play at tournaments hosted by other colleges. The trips are great opportunities to escape hectic city life, bond with teammates, and meet players from other schools. We also usually host scrimmages with nearby Ultimate teams such as Hoffstra and Columbia. Ultimate is a great way to meet a diverse group of people from across NYU’s many colleges and grad schools.
